Operation Organize Garage: One Small Shelf for Garage...

One GIANT leap Garage Organization-kind!

Or I may be overdoing it...

Either way!

I built a shelf!

Remember when I mentioned that I was going to get rid of the cubbies on the wall because they weren't workin' for me? Well, I did. And replaced them with this!

Most of this shelf was made with the materials taken from the hunk'a table, so the dimensions were determined by the most efficient use of materials (it is 38"W x 13 7/8"D x 72"H) and was pretty simple to throw together.

I built four frames to the dimensions dictated by the OSB panels (38" x 13 7/8") and screwed them into the studs (using two screws per stud), making sure the top one was 72" high. I wanted it 72" because that's how tall the shelf that we bought from Costco in the pic below is. The plan is to put that shelf right next to this one.

Then I screwed the OSB panels to the tops of the frames.

The frames were screwed into 3 studs each, two on the back and one on the left side. They were definitely secured to the wall, but they still couldn't hold a heavy load because the front right corner wasn't supported by anything. I cut a 2x4 at 72" and screwed it into all four shelves to carry the weight.

Then loaded it up with the stuff that was in/on the hunk'a table and thought, "Man, this is so much better!!!".

Man, that was a lot of words for this little shelf..

What can I say? I like to gab!

OOH! Wait! My favorite part! THE LIST!

  • Build/Buy another shelving unit and maybe put them side-to-side along the back wall.
  • Build a lumber storage rack
  • Figure out bike organization
  • Create a mud room system along the right wall (just bought ALLLL the stuff for that!)
  • Paint door + trim (a little far fetched, but it's so dirty that I'm thinking a darker color would save my sanity)
  • Maybe I'll get around to cleaning the floor.... (this one is REALLY far-fetched)

  • I'm going to add "Definitely put the other shelf against the back wall" to the list which'll clear up a lot of space on left side of the garage. This may just be a small, crudely made shelf in the corner of my garage, but it's a huuuuge improvement in the overall organization in there!

    2. L.O.V.E your lumber storage rack! I desperately need something like this in my shop! Presently I do have some organization to it (divided up by size for dimensional lumber and leaned on the wall for sheet goods) but a rack would be MUCH nicer!

    3. Once you move those other shelves over to your newly, awesomely built, functional shelving unit :) , then you can put your bikes on hooks from the ceiling in it's place. I see you have one up now, but now you can put them all closer to the wall where the shelf was. Just an idea.

      1. Hey! Thanks for stopping by MINE! :-) Garages seem to be the place everyone dreads, right? And I'll admit, I'm not the neatest builder... haha. So I get it!! Mr. Goats isn't to thrilled when I start pre-drilling holes while watching project runway in the living room. LOL!

    15. There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment?s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
