High Kitchen Ceilings

My kitchen has high ceilings and there is a lot of space between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. It makes for a bright and airy feel in the kitchen, but I am at an absolute loss as to how to decorate up there! My neighbor and I have the same layout, so I was hoping to grab some inspiration from her home, but that didn't quite work. She hung large posters up there that took up most of the wall space, which lessened the airy feel that I like about the room.

Yeah, it doesn't look so airy in this photo - sorry - this was taken as the sun was coming up and I had to supplement the light with the awful track lighting in there.

Anyhow, I've been stuck for almost a year with these blank walls YELLING at me to make them pretty, and I just don't know how!!!

Come along Pottery Barn, with their amazing Mitchell cubby organizers (isn't it always Pottery Barn that saves the day?), and I had my answer! I decided that I was going to build a single row (to keep it small enough to not take away from the height of the kitchen) and decorate it with whatever random stuff I find at Goodwill...

I got all most of my inspiration from how Rayan @ TDC put hers together - 'cept I got lazy and didn't put the supports in the back on this one. It ended up being perfectly strong built this way that I just didn't need 'em..

I haven't had a chance to GO to Goodwill, so I just threw some random stuff from my countertop up there...

And you know what?

I don't like it just yet.

It's not that I don't like THEM (I mean, they'll obviously look better when I get the label holders on, and add some corresponding shelving to the side walls.... but they just don't "GO" with my walls...

See where I'm going with this...?

PAINT!

I just don't think the walls and the cubbies like each other, and I really am rooting for the cubbies on this one. So the walls have to go...

I've been LOVING Benjamin Moore's Pale Oak - but I haven't tried it yet in MY house.... so we'll have to see.

After the huge mishap with the living room wall color,  I am not letting my husband have any say this time....

Let's see where THAT takes us!

  1. fabulous! and ha, i didn't put the supports in either! that is really necessary only if you are going to stack them, so i say we are a-ok on that front! this looks incredible and you did an amazing job!
