Anyone with kids that are obsessed with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is going to have a song stuck in their heads.
For that, I am truly sorry.
But if you don't, we'll just continue onto the actual building of birdy houses.
These ones, to be exact.
When Ana White posted her plans for the Bird House Kit, the Big Kid and her best friend asked if they could build it.
How can you say no to that?!
I had three kits cut the next day.
To make this more "building" for them than just gluing pieces together, I thought I'd make it like the Lowe's Build and Grow kits and predrill all of the holes so that they could hammer the nails in themselves.
That's a 1/16th bit set to go through the "outer" board and barely into the inside board. It guides the nail into the board and allows it to go in more easily without the boards wiggling out of place.
Unfortunately I ran out of brad nails so most of those predrilled holes were useless. We just ended up using the nail gun, and you know what?
Forget my near heart attack.
The only one available to photograph a kid using the nail gun was another kid (I had one hand on the nail gun at all times), so you'll just have to trust me on that..
Ohhh boy, were they thrilled?
I've tried to explain that the birdhouses are probably only going to be decorative (they're too small for many of the local birds to fit), but that hasn't stopped them from dreaming up future inhabitants.
The Big Kid is seven, and I feel now like she's more than capable of simple builds, and this definitely helped her confidence.
You'll be seeing a lot more of her ;-)
